This story, like hundreds of others I have heard, is perhaps the most compelling reason why deliverance and exorcism need to be properly understood in the life of the Church. Recall Jesusâ intense compassion when he responded:
âAnd ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?â
â Lk 13:16 (emphasis added)
How much more desperate are those who, like Mary Anne, have suffered for decades before finding real help!
Pope Paul VI declared that evangelization is the essential mission of the Church,38 and Mary Anneâs story reveals what is at the heart of evangelization â the Good News, the liberating power of Jesus, is not just being presented to an unbelieving world but also into the darkness that binds believers from within. It is the ministry of Jesus to set the captives free, to destroy the works of the devil. This is the ministry of the Church that each of us needs to learn to participate in. This is the message we carry to a world bound by the works of darkness.
When I asked Mary Anne if I could use her story, she replied, âOf course, and I donât mind my name being used. I am so happy to have this freedom in Christ I want to shout out to everyone to get on board!â I believe this is Godâs heart as well. He wants to shout out. Is this not what Jesus said in John 7:37?
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, âIf any one thirsts, let him come to me and drink.â
